On the Roofs of Rome
Rome is a traditionally breathtaking city with major sights including Castel Sant’Angelo, Piazza Venezia and St Peter’s Basilica.
Taking to the city’s streets is the best way to get a closer look at the monumental architecture that is centuries old. Winding cobbled streets and city centre squares all reveal something new to explore and enjoy.
For a totally different view of Rome it is worth climbing to the rooftops and getting a bird’s eye view for yourself. There are plenty of rooftop bars and restaurants to choose from, many of them situated atop luxury hotels.
Making the trip to these rooftop hotspots is well worth the effort as you will be rewarded with unspoilt panoramic views that reach well beyond the green expanse of the Borghese Gardens to an arc of uninterrupted vistas dominated by the ruins of imperial Rome and other architectural heirlooms.
If you are planning a rooftop trip and want to make the most of it then sunset is always a good time for enjoying the city as it unfolds beneath you.
La Bellavista at the Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese is located on a quiet street just a few metres away from the hustle and bustle of the Via Veneto. This wrap-around terrace atop the former palazzo of the Ludovisi-Boncompagni family boasts some of the most stunning views to be found in the whole city and is open all day so you can take a seat and admire the views morning, noon and night.
One of Rome’s most beautiful rooftop terraces can be found on the top floor of the Hotel Splendide Royal which overlooks the Borghese Gardens. The Mirabelle Restaurant is an elegant treat but if you are not ready for dinner then you can enjoy a drink in the American Bar which also has terrace seating. From the terrace you can see across the Pinciana hill to the Palazzo Medici and on to the cupola of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The Rapheal Hotel has been a firm favourite for decades and the rooftop bar and restaurant get you up close and personal with the great dome of the Chiesa Santa Maria della Pace. In the distance you can also see the angel atop the Castel Sant’Angelo as well as the twin horsemen of the Piazza Venezia.
After a busy day’s sightseeing the Es Hotel houses a rooftop pool for a relaxing dip. This area also has a bar and restaurant open to guests and offers 180 degree views over the city – giving you a new perspective on what you may have seen during the day or ideas for what to do the next.
Rome’s slender spires, fabulous fountains and Baroque turrets and towers make this a magical place to visit and spend some time. The luxury hotels in Rome are as impressive as the city itself and make your stay ever more special.
