Creating a Distinctive Look for your Home

Whether you own your own house or you are renting a place to stay, there comes a time when you want to put your stamp on your home. Creating a space that you feel comfortable in and one that reflects your personality is a large part in changing a ‘house’ to a ‘home’.

One of the first things many people do when they move into a new house or flat is completely change the colour scheme. However, in many rented properties painting or wallpapering isn’t an option. When that’s the case, the best way to make sure that you are reflected in the décor is by selecting the painting, wall hangings and furniture that suit your sense of style.

For example, a new set of curtains or a well-chosen throw for a living room can completely change the tone of a room even if you can’t strip it of all of its old furniture. The important thing is to look past limitations rather than feel as though you don’t have free rein to redecorate. In the same vein, a boring hall or bathroom can be instantly transformed with just some small additions – for example a large venetian mirror to open up the hall, or an antique light fixture to add some grandeur to your smallest room.

You can ensure that your taste remains impeccable in the bedroom too, even if the fixtures and fittings aren’t quite to your taste. A dreary carpet can be largely concealed with some well placed rugs and even dire wallpaper or paint jobs can be softened with a little draped fabric if it can’t be changed. From bedspreads to bedside tables, there are plenty of ways to ensure that your bedroom accessories set the tone for the entire room.

If you are staying in a furnished flat or house and the landlord won’t take away furniture that doesn’t quite gel with your aesthetics, don’t despair. Simply decide which pieces can be best placed or adapted to suit your plans, and if you come across something you really don’t like you could always think about putting it in storage for the duration of your stay.

For the most part however, you’re likely to find that, with the right accessories and careful placement, this won’t be necessary. Whether you’re a fan of simple Quaker style of the deco sophistication of mirrored furniture, you’ll soon find that a few key pieces can set the tone for a whole room or home.
