Weatherproof Your Home for Winter
Wintertime in the United Kingdom is associated with cold weather and when the darker days draw in you usually want to retreat to the warmth and comfort of your own home. Taking the time to protect your home sweet home against the elements will pay dividends as winter runs its course.
Extreme weather conditions can be hard on your home so a spot of preventative action will help you to save money as well as cutting down on Co2 emissions.
Whether you live in a one bedroom flat or settle in a larger family abode, there are numerous handy hints and tips that can help to protect your home against the coldest season of the year.
Winter heating bills are one of the biggest expenses at this time of year so making sure your insulation is up to scratch is a good starting point.
Paying to heat your home is a pointless endeavour if the hot air escapes though drafts and gaps. Around 75% of Britain’s homes lose energy due to inadequate insulation so insulating your home is a cost efficient way of keeping heat in and energy bills down.
A third of all heat is lost through the walls and simple insulation will save the typical household over £100 each year. If your house was built between 1930 and 1990 then it is likely to have cavity walls which are suitable for insulation.
The roof of your home is another common area for heat to escape. 25% of warm air is lost here but simply insulating your loft with glass-fibre or mineral wool, ideally 270mm deep, traps the heat, saving you around £150 each year.
Cut out drafts and stop heat escaping by filling door and window gaps with foam strips or mastic sealant. Even just keeping your curtains drawn in the evenings helps to minimise drafts and heat loss.
Also complete a quick check around the outside of your house looking for any nooks and crannies where cold air could be pushing its way inside. Entry points of piping, plumbing and ventilation are common culprits for causing drafts so pay particular attention to these areas and use spray insulating foam to seal any gaps you find.
Once you have worked out how to keep the heat inside your home you should be able to turn your heating down by a few degrees. Turning the heating in your home down by just 1 degree can save the average household almost £6,000 over a lifetime, which equates to a saving of a few hundred pounds each year.
Keeping your house warm and cosy is dependent on a fully functioning boiler and winter time is one of the most inconvenient times of year for a boiler breakdown. To avoid needing boiler repair have your model serviced to make sure it is in perfect working order.
