Ridiculous Mobile Phone Applications

Smartphones have revolutionised the mobile phone industry, but there are some aspects of these devices that really make you wonder if we’ve not gone a step too far. Many smartphones are capable of holding a whole host of applications, but some of them really are quite ridiculous or just downright bizarre. Many are also pointless, impractical or just downright offensive – so which are some of the best offenders when it comes to ridiculous mobile phone applications?

The Tic Tac app for the iPhone is one that seems to be fairly popular, even though there is simply no point to it. Working in much the same way as the Carling app, where a user can twist their handset, the screen depicting a pint of lager swirling around as if it was being drunk, the Tic Tac app lets users shake the device, which shows a pack of the candy on the screen. You can pretend to ‘eat’ the sweets by holding the phone at an angle so the Tic Tacs ‘fall out’ – but, as there are no real Tic Tacs, it’s hard to see the point of this app.

You could also argue about the point of Amuck Plumb-bob, where you can watch your expensive iPhone emulate a weighted piece of string. There really isn’t much to add about this app – that’s all it does. While we’re looking at apps on the pointless side, the flashlight app is a nice idea but one that the iPhone already does when you launch an app with a white background. There’s no need to get an app that does something your phone already does – and nothing more. At least while you’re using the iPhone’s normal apps to see, you can also browse your contacts and emails.

Moving on to apps on the slightly bizarre plane, the UK payphone app has to be a winner. This app is designed to tell you where the nearest UK payphone is. That is, while you’re already using your mobile phone which, in most cases, is on a contract that means you’ll always have funds available to contact people in an emergency. A good idea, perhaps, for personal organisers but not for mobile phones.

Finally, the seismometer has to be one of the most ridiculous apps. Naturally, what most people in the middle of earthquakes know they have to do is find a way to survive the cracking ground and falling debris. However, this app encourages users to stop and open up an app to estimate the Richter magnitude.

Still, there are plenty of excellent apps out there, but for some of the more ridiculous ones, you may wonder why you switched to a contract smartphone rather than your previous prepay SIM cards!
