Getting Close To Nature In San Diego
San Diego enjoys a prime position in America. Just down the west coast from Los Angeles, the downtown area looks out over San Diego Bay. And since it has steep hills as well as a flatter area looking out over the Bay, you’ve got a wonderful opportunity to explore some more natural areas and attractions.
For example you have San Diego Zoo. This is a wonderful place for the whole family to visit, regardless of age. As with all zoos there are lots of different exhibits to enjoy. And with named areas including Panda Canyon, Elephant Odyssey and the Lost Forest, you’ll certainly look forward to seeing all the different animals in their recreated habitats.
If you would like to know more about the history of the city, then head for the Old Town. This is just north of the centre of San Diego, not far from the San Diego Freeway. Many people don’t realise that the city is split into the Old Town and the New Town, but visiting the Old Town State National Park will give you an insight into the history of it.
You have also got Presidio Park and Heritage County Park nearby, giving you another opportunity to explore some of the green areas within San Diego itself.
Perhaps the best park of all in the city is Balboa Park. This is famous and you may well have heard of it, even if you haven’t visited the city as yet. It is also extremely big and makes the Old Town State National Park look tiny by comparison!
The zoo is housed within the park, as are lots of different museums. But with regard to nature you will also find several gardens within Balboa Park. The Old Cactus Garden is just one of these, and it will probably make you realise that when displayed well, cacti can be a lot more attractive than you might think! Don’t miss the Japanese Friendship Garden either – it is truly beautiful.
But finally there is one other way you can get up close to nature and see something you may never have seen before. This is whale watching, and San Diego Bay is well known for being a prime spot to do this at. You can try and spot them from land, but there are also a number of cruises that will take you out to see them close up.
When it comes to booking your stay, there are lots of San Diego hotels that are near to some of the attractions mentioned above. If you opt for a hotel near the Bay itself, you may even be able to see the whales from your hotel room window!
