Here Comes the Sun: A Guide to Looking Good this Summer

Sun worshippers the length and breadth of the country will be eagerly awaiting the start of the summer months so they can at last ditch the solariums and instead immerse themselves in the real McCoy.

However, it’s not just beach bums who look forward to the three or four sun-filled months each year. Those who simply like to get back to basics and wander around outdoors in nothing more than a t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops will be equally welcoming of the warm weather.

Of course, most years yield at least a couple of false dawns, where a sudden bout of warm weather will send winter coats to the back of the wardrobe, only for them to be called back into action after only a few days in storage. However, when summer does eventually arrive to stay though, it’s always good to resurrect that favourite short-sleeved shirt from the previous summer, or those sandals that were oh-so comfortable on that last two-week holiday in the Mediterranean – and it certainly helps to save some money too.

But even nine months is long enough for an item to look a little dated and after being on a hanger in the cupboard for so long, it may not quite have the appeal it once it did. Coupled with the fact that people’s general shape may have altered somewhat since the last warm season, then summer may be the time to think about a wardrobe makeover.

For those who like to maximise their exposure to the sun whilst lounging by a pool, then floral swimshorts and flip-flops accompanied by a vest or singlet always looks the part. For those who like to keep a little more covered-up on those balmy summer afternoons in the park, a long-sleeved t-shirt with cropped denim trousers may be more the thing.

At a time of year when many people will be going festival crazy, it’s important to think about what will be both practical in terms of the weather and what will look cool. Perhaps a pair of khaki cargo shorts with a skinny placket vest will be great during the day, but the evening chill may need to be combated with a fashionable oversized beanie hat.

Of course, regardless of the occasion or the desired image, a smart pair of men’s sunglasses will complete any look; from classic brown sun specs to silver aviator shades, they are one fashion accessory nobody can do without.

So, the summer sun brings a golden opportunity to take stock of an outdated wardrobe and seek out new seasonal wear. From shorts and vests to flip-flops and sunglasses, summertime offers the chance to pack the winter warmers away – for a while at least – and sample the season’s best fashion items.
