Surf will most definitely be up on the UK’s beaches this summer if the recent long range forecasts prove to be correct. After two successive washout summers, the met are predicting that this summer is going to be hot and dry – a sun-worshippers dream!

That’s great news for those clutching tickets to the summer’s music festivals, as they can leave their wellingtons at home, thus creating more space for outlandish fancy dress or more fitting clothing and accessories. But it’s even better news for anyone who envisages a summer lounging on a superb UK beach, such as those found at Newquay, Blackpool or new entrant Bournemouth, with its new artificial reef.

So, if you’re heading off for a holiday or summer of unbridled fun and sun, be sure to follow this top 5 list of what to pack to ensure you’re covered from beach to BBQ.

1. Swim shorts

Just as essential as your passport! Swimwear this season is most definitely knee-length, with strong patterns exhibiting a tropical feel. Don’t shy away from bright colours, florals and traditional Hawaii-style swimming shorts. Furthermore, drawstrings and waist bands in complimentary or contrasting colours will be de rigueur.

2. Flip-flops & Sandals

If you intend on spending plenty of time at the beach or walking around during hot temperatures, then it may prove an idea to invest in comfortable, waterproof footwear that you can get all sandy and dunk in the sea. Flip flops are always a good and chilled out option.

3. The Weekend Holdall

Aside from clothes you may want to make a few accessory purchases ahead of summer, such as a suitable holdall. Although a bag can definitely be a fashion statement, it should also be dictated by your summer activities. The last thing you want is your new leather weekender drenched in Pimms and sea water! And remember, rucksacks aren’t just for school children should this type of bag be more to your preference.

4. Shorts

Once off the beach and ideal for wearing to the bar during daytime, early evening and even balmy nights, pack the quintessential men’s shorts. Check patterns and khaki are still on trend this summer, but only in cargo shorts style. Additionally, camouflage and leaf print shorts will also be expected in the best beach bars this summer. For a cool look and feel – especially in bright hot weather – a pair of stone chino shorts is ideal, or if you are the nominated keyholder and bottle opener carrier, you may wish to opt for khaki utility shorts and the inevitable pockets needed to carry such hardware!

5. Sunglasses

For the bold, primary colours and bright white frames are back in a big way this summer. So, get in touch with your 80s side with a pair of wayfarers or stick to a tried and true flattering pair or aviators. Just make sure they protect your eyes for those beach volleyball matches and strolls down the beach to check out the local “colour.”
